Kids Fishing Derby Set for Oct. 24

Outside for a Better Inside, in partnership with the Crown Casting Club for Kids, is hosting a fishing derby. The Kids Fishing Derby invites young anglers to test their fishing expertise at the Yankee Tank Home Owners Association Outside for a Better Inside Pond, located at Kasold Drive and 32nd Street.

Anglers can bring their own fishing poles and bait; however, a limited number of poles and bait will be on hand for use. Supervision will be provided; however, parents are asked to assist.

The derby will be held 9-11 A.M. Saturday, Oct. 24. The derby is free and open to the public. There will be prizes awarded for fish in different categories, as well as for all participants.

McGrew agent John McGrew had the idea for Outside for a Better Inside in 2007 when he read an article in USA Weekend titled, “Raising Healthier Kids.”  It validated the concern that many children are living lives of virtual reality rather than experiencing the real world.

John gave over 100 copies of the book to stakeholders in the Lawrence community, and many of those who read the book chose to be advocates for the mission. With thousands of hours of volunteer effort and contributions from individuals and local service organizations, the organization has accomplished its goal of providing an outside outlet for children.

McGrew agents Mary Jones and Pam Bushouse are members of the organization. For more information about this event, contact Mary Jones at 785-766-3023.
